One of Richard Hughes' key signings now wants to leave the club in a surprise move.

It's clear frustrations are building within Liverpool at the moment. After a brilliant spending spree in the summer, things were not supposed to end up like this.

Liverpool were supposed to be fighting for the Premier League title, not barely struggling to beat relegation fodder and scrambling for a place in next season's Champions League.

Some may argue the changes within the squad were far too wholesale. Maybe Hughes should have limited the Reds new arrivals. However, they are wrong, it was a necessity.

The squad at the time had run its course. Hughes needed a change. And he has delivered. Obviously, so far the results are yet to come but they will with time.

Right now, what needs to be managed is how the new players are adjusting and according to one report, significant work needs to be done with one of his key arrivals, who is struggling at the moment.

The challenge of adjusting to life at Liverpool has been particularly difficult for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who arrived with a strong reputation as Valencia's no.1 but has since found opportunities limited and had to settle for being a no.2.

Displacing Alisson Becker was never going to be easy, but he will have expected to play.

Mamardashvili has so far been limited to just 11 matches this season and was even ignored for the FA Cup game against Brighton, a game he would have expected to start.

Right now, it is not known whether the club will exercise the option to extend Alisson's deal for a further year after his contract expires at the end of the season, but it is expected.

Beyond that, it's possible that Alisson could be sold this summer, but what's more likely is that he will stay for a further season, leaving Mamardashvili having to play second fiddle again.

Mamardashvili hasn't had the easiest time when he has played. His performances coincided with Liverpool's worst form of the season yielded only three clean sheets which has made reintegration into the side even more challenging.

According to TEAMtalk, this lack of regular involvement has left Mamardashvili increasingly frustrated with his role at Anfield, and he is “seriously considering” submitting a request to leave on loan next season in search of consistent game time and continued development.

While Liverpool still view him as part of their long-term plans, the club is reported to be open to the possibility of a temporary move should the right opportunity arise.

This gives Liverpool a bit of a conundrum.

They have to preserve the goalkeeper’s development and value, while also managing squad dynamics and making sure there is adequate back-up behind Alisson, who is very injury prone.

What's important to mention is that Liverpool do have a number of very talented goalkeepers behind him in the ranks. Vitezslav Jaros was superb at Ajax while on loan this season and Armin Pecsi was a Golden Boy nominee last year and he's been in great form for the Reds' U21 side this season.

So, there is room for Mamardashvili to leave. But it would be a surprising move given just how key Liverpool viewed his signing when it was agreed back in 2024.
