Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their winless run with a vital 2-0 victory over Brentford in the Premier League and eased pressure on manager Thomas Frank in the process.
The victory was Spurs’ first league win in six matches and only their second at home this season.
It arrived against Frank’s former club, who could not produce the forceful away display needed to disrupt a side short on confidence.
Tottenham began with more intent than in previous home matches and looked sharper in possession from the outset.
Richarlison broke the deadlock in the first half when he finished from close range after a clever move down the right.
Xavi Simons, operating with licence behind the forwards, created the chance with a burst into space and a measured cross.
Simons went on to settle the result before the interval with a composed solo goal, pressing high to win possession and driving into the area before finishing low into the corner.
It was the 21-year-old’s first goal since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer and a moment that underlined his importance to a new attacking structure.
Brentford struggled to unsettle Spurs despite the emotional backdrop provided by Frank facing the club he left with deep affection.
Their only threat before the break saw Igor Thiago denied by Guglielmo Vicario after being sent through on goal.
The early chance proved pivotal because Spurs scored with their next attack and settled into a rhythm that Brentford could not disrupt.
Frank’s attempt to refresh the side with changes in midfield encouraged more progressive passing and wider movement.
Simons capitalised on the setup with constant movement between the lines and a willingness to take responsibility in key areas.
Spurs managed the second half with relative comfort, showing a greater maturity than in recent weeks.
Mohammed Kudus and Randal Kolo Muani both threatened to add a third, while Richarlison remained lively in attack.
A brief moment of tension emerged when Kudus attempted a piece of showboating that irritated full-back Djed Spence and almost allowed Brentford back into the match.
Spurs quickly regrouped and the game drifted towards a controlled finish as Brentford lacked the creativity or aggression to mount a late response.
The result provided Frank with breathing space after a difficult run that had raised questions about his suitability for the job.
It also highlighted why the club invested heavily in Simons, whose performance offered a glimpse of a system beginning to function with clarity.
Tottenham will hope the victory provides stability at a crucial point in the campaign, while Brentford remain in search of consistency away from home.
