Globo.com reports that the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice has rejected Flamengo’s request to revisit a ruling that awards the Taça das Bolinhas to São Paulo.

In Wednesday’s decision, the court said the dispute was already settled by the judiciary and could not be reopened in Rio. Rapporteur judge Fábio Uchoa Pinto de Miranda Montenegro reaffirmed Sport as 1987 champions, confirming São Paulo as trophy holders.

Flamengo said last week that the Federal Court in São Paulo had reconsidered the order to deliver the trophy to São Paulo after an appeal from the club. The club added it remained confident of definitive recognition of its rights.

That ruling came from the 12th Federal Civil Court, which re-examined the case at Flamengo’s request. It also said jurisdiction over the trophy’s fate lay with the Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro, and the Taça stayed in Caixa Econômica Federal’s custody.

After the new Rio decision, São Paulo believes it can now request the trophy.

The Taça das Bolinhas has long been disputed by Flamengo and São Paulo. In 1975 the national body, then the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos, set it for the first club to win three straight or five alternating league titles.

Flamengo argues it completed a fifth title with the 1992 crown, but the issue centres on 1987. The CBF recognised Flamengo in 2011, then in 2018 the Supreme Federal Court ruled Sport the sole champions, making São Paulo the first five-time winners after 2007.
