Barcelona are already planning their next transfer moves, but one situation has sparked an internal debate.

The discussion revolves around former youth team winger Jan Virgili, who is enjoying an impressive season at Mallorca.

According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona are closely monitoring the player’s progress after his strong performances in La Liga

The young winger left the club after realising that first-team opportunities would be limited, choosing to join Mallorca on a five-year contract.

The decision has paid off so far, as Virgili has established himself as a regular starter and has become one of Mallorca’s most influential attacking players.

Although he has struggled to score goals consistently, his overall contribution has been excellent, especially in creating chances. So far, he has registered six assists in La Liga, underlining his impact.

What is Barcelona’s role?

When Barcelona sold him, the transfer fee was around €4 million. However, the club made sure to protect their long-term interests.

They retained 40% of any future sale and also secured a right of first refusal, which could now become very important.

Note that it is not a buy-back option, but it allows them to match any offer that Mallorca receive.

For example, if a club bids €20 million for Virgili, Barcelona could match that amount and would have priority in negotiations.

At the moment, his release clause stands at €30 million. His name has already started to circulate again within the Barcelona offices, and the club are keeping a close eye on his development.

So what now?

Despite the growing interest, Virgili is not currently the top priority, as Barcelona are focusing more on the possibility of signing Marcus Rashford, whose clause is also set at €30 million.

The English forward’s performances have convinced the club to seriously consider paying that amount to Manchester United.

This situation creates a dilemma, as Virgili is nine years younger and would be a much cheaper option, but the club’s focus appears to be on a more established attacking name.
