River announce investment of more than $100m to expand and roof the Monumental

River Plate have announced expansion and a roof for the Estadio Monumental, a project valued at more than $100 million.

Bolavip reports that a fifth tier will be built above the current upper stands as a continuous ring, adding around 16,000 seats and taking capacity beyond 101,000.

The announcement was made on Tuesday 27 January via the club’s website and official channels. Work on the new ring is expected to take between two and three years.

Seat colours will be red and white to create a 360-degree flag effect across the bowl. Existing floodlights will be removed to accommodate the higher structure.

This phase continues a stadium programme advanced under Rodolfo D’Onofrio and Jorge Brito, now carried forward by president Stefano Di Carlo.
