River Plate have made an early move for Nicolás Otamendi as his Benfica contract runs down. Olé reports that the Buenos Aires club have opened initial talks to try to bring the 38-year-old home.
Otamendi’s future remains undecided, with a decision expected in the coming weeks. River are already building for next season and view the veteran centre-back as a priority target.
The report also notes that Otamendi is not the only player being explored, with River sounding out options in other positions.
Despite firm interest from River, and from Arab clubs, there is still a possibility he stays at Benfica. The Argentine places his family’s well-being first and considers Lisbon the ideal setting rather than a return to Argentina.
This season for Benfica, Otamendi, valued at 1 million euros, has played 46 matches, 27 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. He has scored three goals across 4,079 minutes.
