Sunderland Echo reports that Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has paid tribute to Sunderland ahead of a pre-season friendly in the United States.

The Black Cats will spend a week in Nashville, finishing with a meeting with reigning Premier League champions Liverpool at Geodis Park on Saturday 25 July. They then face Leeds United in Harrison, New Jersey on Thursday 30 July at the Sports Illustrated Stadium, home of the New York Red Bulls and Gotham FC. Their tour concludes on Sunday 2 August against Wrexham at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Looking ahead to that finale, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star joined the commentary gantry with fellow co-owner Ryan Reynolds during Wrexham’s 2-0 Championship win over Swansea City on Friday, and praised the Black Cats while noting his delight at their Premier League return last year.

“I watched Sunderland Til’ I Die and thought it was a really beautiful documentary. It will be an honour to play them in Philadelphia. I was rooting for them in the play-offs and so happy when they went up, and thank god they did because they deserve it.”

At the time of writing, Wrexham could yet join Sunderland in the Premier League next term. Phil Parkinson’s side have enjoyed three successive promotions, sit sixth in the second tier, and are on course for a play-off place after winning four of their last five league games.
