Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City has triggered serious concern, not simply because of the result, but due to how quickly control slipped away from Arne Slot’s side. Former striker Robbie Fowler did not hold back in his post match assessment, capturing the frustration felt by supporters watching a promising display unravel.
For a side that began with intent and energy, the sudden drop in confidence stood out. Against a team like Manchester City, any lapse is punished, and Liverpool found that out the hard way.
For the opening half hour, Liverpool looked competitive, moving the ball well and creating chances. There was a sense of control, even belief, that they could impose themselves on the match.
Then it shifted.
Fowler summed up the change bluntly: “I’ve never seen a Liverpool team so devoid of confidence after starting the game so well… then all of a sudden, the confidence has just gone.”
That abrupt swing is what will trouble Arne Slot most. This was not a slow erosion under pressure, it was a complete collapse in momentum. Once City asserted themselves, Liverpool’s structure and composure disappeared, and the game drifted away.

Individual moments often define big matches, and Liverpool did not take theirs. Fowler pointed directly to the attacking line, highlighting missed opportunities that could have changed the narrative.
He said: “Mo Salah had a few chances… that’s a team that is devoid of confidence now.”
Those missed openings felt significant. In matches against Manchester City, efficiency is everything. When chances go begging, the psychological impact can spread quickly through the team. That appeared to happen here, with hesitation replacing the sharpness seen earlier in the match.
Beyond confidence, Fowler raised a deeper issue, leadership on the pitch. When momentum swings, elite teams rely on strong voices and personalities to steady the ship.
He noted: “Leaders out there to try and drag people through the tough times… that’s probably what we’re not seeing with this Liverpool team.”
It is a concern that aligns with post match comments from within the squad. There is an acknowledgment that resilience and authority are lacking at key moments. Against top level opposition, that absence becomes glaring.
Attention now shifts to how Liverpool respond, particularly with a major European fixture on the horizon. Fowler made it clear where responsibility lies.
He explained: “It’s up to the manager to go in there and try and get these players… give them a little bit of a lift, because they’ve got a massive game Wednesday.”
Arne Slot has already delivered success with a Premier League title in his first season, but this represents a different challenge. Managing confidence, restoring belief, and re establishing control within games will define the next phase of Liverpool’s campaign.
If this performance against Man City is not addressed quickly, the risk is that one poor result becomes part of a wider downturn. The reaction, both tactically and mentally, will be crucial.
