One of the more emotional moments for FC Barcelona during the last season was when the striker Robert Lewandowski said his goodbyes at the Spotify Camp Nou after having decided to part ways with the Catalan club. Thus, the Pole left the Spanish side after spending four years, during which he won 3 La Liga titles, 3 Spanish Super Cups, and 1 Copa del Rey.
Now, the Polish veteran is ready to start the next chapter of his career, as SPORT reports that the MLS side Chicago Fire has officially announced his signing. The striker joins the American club as a free-agent, and has signed a two-year contract.
Lewandowski was also enjoying strong interest from other sides from Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Turkey, but Chicago ultimately got ahead of the competition and convinced the forward to play for them in what could be the last adventure of his career.
The head-coach of the American club, Gregg Berhalter, had been a key figure in this operation. In addition to his public shows of admiration for the striker, the coach also convinced Lewandowski about the project and the role he himself would get to play in his plans.
Following the official announcement from the club, the forward also took to social media, and published a simple message: “Hello, Chicago Fire”, accompanied with an image of him wearing the jersey of his new club. Reactions to the announcement and the striker’s message were not slow in coming, and the two other Chicago clubs, Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs also welcomed the former Barcelona player to the city.
Robert Lewandowski can make his debut with his new club on July 17th, when his side would be facing Vancouver. This match would allow him to face a former teammate, Thomas Muller, with whom he played for several years at Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Barcelona fans would be hoping the Pole would have a successful stint and will continue to show his talents in this new country going forward.
