The losses are piling up for Toronto FC, but head coach Robin Fraser remains confident the club can turn things around.
Toronto's 2-0 loss to the New England Revolution on Saturday, May 3, was yet another game in which the Reds looked flat and put up little fight against their opponents. If it wasn't for some spectacular saves from Sean Johnson, the scoreline could've been even uglier for Toronto.
Where does the team go from here? At this point, the season is already lost, and there seemingly is no light at the end of the tunnel for the current squad. Sure, Toronto has had some insanely bad luck with injuries this season, but it's hard to feel optimistic about the future. For now, though, Robin Fraser is fairly optimistic that things can still be turned around based on his post-match comments.
"For us to be at our best, I think our engagement level needs to be extremely high, which it was for last month or so. It's interesting because I feel like we try, I never really question their effort, but the margins are so fine in this league anyway and just to compete we needed to be really engaged from the beginning."Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser
Combined with the banner protest dilemma and the team getting booed off the field after the loss to New England, fans no longer have trust that this team will get better. Even Fraser, who usually can take positives out of matches, felt that there really wasn't much he could say that was positive about their latest performance. However, Fraser is not disappointed overall with how the team has looked.
"This is a group that works, they try, they give you everything. We talked early on, after the first 5 games about the moments that are killing us and we have to eliminate those moments. When we do that, this is a group that can compete with anyone... When we were engaged we keep ourselves in games... and we've not been as sharp in front of goal as we need to be. It will get better, we know it will get better. "Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser
Not sharp in front of the goal might be a bit of an understatement. Just Austin FC and CF Montreal have scored fewer goals than Toronto's eight on the season.
Between injuries and underperforming players, Toronto still doesn't have an out-and-out starting centre-forward. In fact, once Ola Brynhildsen was subbed off on Saturday, Federico Bernardeschi moved central to assume the position, which tells it all for Toronto.
