Robin Roefs has already addressed his Sunderland future as Tottenham assess summer goalkeeper options. According to Sunderland Echo, Spurs have shortlisted the 23-year-old, and Sunderland remain confident of keeping him.
He has impressed in his first Premier League season after arriving from NEC Nijmegen for an initial fee of about nine million pounds plus add-ons. The Dutchman quickly became one of Régis Le Bris’ key players despite being little known in England before he signed.
He suffered an injury against Bournemouth earlier in the campaign and missed several games, with Melker Ellborg impressing in his place. Roefs returned for the 1-0 win over Tottenham, reaffirming his status as Le Bris’ first choice when fit.
Following that victory he was linked with a £60 million move to Chelsea and asked about the growing speculation. He said he was focused on the trust and appreciation he feels inside the club and was not paying attention to outside noise.
He also stressed that it was not the time to think about moving, adding that he would keep going unless something changed. Roefs praised the project at Sunderland after promotion and hoped the team could build again next season.
The interest now has renewed relevance as the London club fight relegation. The report also notes that Spurs view Roefs as a strong candidate to be number one. Any potential deal is expected to be difficult. They are also considering Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and Manchester City’s James Trafford, with Guglielmo Vicario expected to depart.
