  • Pep Guardiola confirms Rodri will miss the Burnley clash and is a doubt for the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.
  • Ruben Dias remains sidelined for the trip to Turf Moor as City navigate a mounting fitness crisis.
  • John Stones has returned to first-team training after a month-long layoff.

Manchester City’s quest to reclaim the Premier League summit has been hit by a significant injury blow, with Pep Guardiola confirming Rodri will miss Wednesday’s trip to Burnley.

Fresh from a pulsating 2-1 victory over Arsenal that moved Manchester City to within just three points of leaders Arsenal, the Blues now head to Turf Moor knowing a win would officially send them top of the table on goal difference.

However, they will have to achieve that feat without their midfield general, following on from Rodri’s apparent groin injury sustained during the second-half of Sunday evening’s meeting with the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium.

Rodri and Ruben Dias injury blow revealed

Speaking during pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Pep Guardiola delivered an update on Rodri, revealing his personal belief that the Spaniard will not be fit to feature against Scott Parker’s side.

“I think for tomorrow he will not be ready,” Guardiola admitted to reporters. “And we’ll see in the next games, [FA Cup] semi-final against Southampton or in 12, 13 days against Everton.”

The injury list does not end there for Manchester City however, with Ruben Dias – who has been a pillar of the City backline – also remaining ruled out for the clash against a Burnley side clinging on to their top-flight survival.

The absence of both the midfield anchor and defensive leader leaves Manchester City somewhat vulnerable, although supporters will be confident in the role to be played by Nico Gonzalez during Rodri’s absence, and the continued partnership of Abdukodir Khusanov and Marc Guehi in central defence.

John Stones provides much-needed boost

There was, however, a glimmer of light for City regarding the fitness of John Stones at the business end of the season, with the England international having been absent for the best part of a month.

Pep Guardiola confirmed to the media that Stones is finally back on the grass at the City Football Academy, diverting away from any clarity around the versatile defender’s future at the Etihad Stadium.

“The only thing I can say is that he’s back,” Pep noted. “After two, three weeks or one month, he’s training with us, and this is the best news.”

Whether Stones is ready for immediate action remains to be seen, but his presence in the squad could provide a timely psychological boost, and much-needed experience during a run-in.

With Arsenal watching on and the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley looming this Saturday, Manchester City’s squad depth is about to face yet another test, and without Rodri and Dias, the responsibility will fall on the likes of Nico Gonzalez and Abdukodir Khusanov to maintain momentum.
