Rodrygo has been banned for two Champions League matches, so the Real Madrid forward will miss both legs of the play-offs against Benfica. UEFA confirmed the suspension on Thursday, citing insulting or abusive language towards the referee.

The 25-year-old Brazilian directed the remarks during last week’s 2-4 defeat to Benfica, Madrid’s final league-phase match.

He was shown two yellow cards in stoppage time as he protested against Benfica’s time-wasting tactics.

The loss denied Madrid automatic qualification for the last 16, sending them into the play-offs against the same opponents.

The first leg is scheduled for 17 February at 21:00 in Lisbon, with the return on 25 February at 21:00 in Madrid.
