Manchester United’s summer overhaul is yet to catch fire with Ruben Amorim desperate to start his first full campaign with some fresh faces, as well as letting go of some troublesome high profile stars.

The second half of last season did little to suggest the current crop could adapt to Amorim’s methods and INEOS have been tasked with providing the head coach with the relevant tools to kick start his reign in Manchester.

Sorting out the attacking options in Amorim’s squad is the priority for head figures at the club, having seen United consistently struggle for goals throughout the last couple of seasons.

Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join Matheus Cunha through doors at Old Trafford which adds obvious firepower but the question over who will lead the line for the new campaign lingers on.

Rasmus Hojlund was expected to be that guy after signing for a hefty £72 million in the summer of 2023 but the Dane has regressed badly from promising early signs and it looks like the bright lights of the Theatre of Dreams are too much for him to handle.

Amorim is no doubt looking for an upgrade at the focal point of his front line, leaving Hojlund’s future at the club in doubt.

United are willing to do business for the striker but finding a suitor for the misfiring 22-year-old is proving difficult.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, Serie A giants Roma are showing a fleeting interest in Hojlund but only as an alternative to another Premier League forward.

Roma’s eyes firmly on Brighton star

It’s claimed Roma’s number one target this summer is Brighton youngster Evan Ferguson with the Italians proposing an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

Roma are in advanced talks with the Premier League club over the deal, which would eventually see Ferguson move to the Stadio Olimpico for a fee of 25-30 million Euros.

As reported by Sport Witness, the deal is all but over the line with Roma just waiting on Ferguson to give the green light for the move to be finalised.

The 20-year-old Irishman holds a similar profile to Hojlund with Roma coach Gian Gasperini looking for an “explosive” number nine to join his ranks in the Italian capital.

Gasperini was Hojlund’s coach at Atalanta, where he burst onto the European scene, but not even that is enough to convince the experienced coach he should be Roma’s priority this summer.

What next for United?

Whilst Hojlund’s future remains unclear, United do have players very publicly up for sale but are yet to force any of them out of the doors, mainly due to the handsome wages they are currently enjoying at Old Trafford.

Hojlund’s sale isn’t currently seen as a priority but with the need to bolster the kitty clear, he may find himself under pressure to leave should United find an alternative up front.

A raft of names have been linked with taking the Dane’s spot but it does feel like United need to get their sales hat on quickly if they are going to arm Amorim with the best weapons possible in time for the new season. Featured image Matt McNulty via Getty Images
