Serie A giants Inter came close to signing Manu Kone from Roma in the summer. The move fell through due to the Roman club’s ownership making a key decision but the midfielder has now spoken about how the situation was in the summer.
Kone gave an interview to Corriere della Sera today and he was asked specifically about Roma, Gian Piero Gasperini and Inter.
When speaking of the Nerazzurri, he said (via ForzaRoma): “If a club like Inter is interested in me, it’s a positive thing for me. I spoke to Gasperini about it, and I told him I didn’t know what would happen. But I added: ‘As long as I wear this shirt, I’ll do it 100%’. Roma is the only club that believed in me last summer, and I have a duty to reciprocate.”
He also stated that Yann Sommer and Marcus Thuram did try to speak to him about a move to Inter.
“We joked about it. They told me to make the best choice, but it wasn’t up to me. I was very happy at Roma, it’s not like I wanted to leave at all costs.”
Kone also talked about how he ended up joining Roma from Borussia Monchengladbach.
“I spoke to Milan, it’s true. Massara called me, but for my development, it was right to go to Borussia. Then here at Roma I found Massara again: the circle has closed anyway, right?”
Kone also revealed that Paul Pogba and Serge Aurier happen to be his role models.
“A role model, not an idol. He, along with Serge Aurier. Paul, for us kids from the suburbs, was a symbol. Every now and then, I still stand there and watch his videos.”
Kone has been one of Roma’s most important players since last season and under Gasperini, his role will enhance further in the ongoing campaign.
