Romero wants new Corinthians deal, reflects on his time at the club

With his contract with Corinthians nearing its end, Romero has expressed his desire to stay at the club. The forward also highlighted his connection with the team from Parque São Jorge and recalled some of the most memorable moments of his journey wearing the black-and-white shirt.

In an interview with UOL Esporte, the Paraguayan reaffirmed his wish to renew his contract. “I want to stay. There are still four months left until the end of the year and we are very focused on the Brazilian Championship and the Copa do Brasil, where we have taken an important step. But above all, my goal is to keep helping wherever I can. Today, I am calm. The future will tell whether I stay or not.”

At 33 years old, Romero has a contract only until the end of 2025 and has not yet been approached by the board to discuss a possible renewal. The topic, in fact, has been a delicate one behind the scenes, given the club’s political and financial situation.

Facing the prospect of a second farewell, the forward recalled what it was like when he arrived at Parque São Jorge in 2014. “At the time, I told my agent that I wanted to come here. I wanted to get to know the club, be a part of it, contribute in some way. When I arrived, in my first interview, I reaffirmed that my purpose was to leave my mark and my story at Corinthians,” he said.

He also spoke about the difficulties he faced adapting in the first few months. “I lived in Tatuapé, everything was far away, I couldn’t go out much, I didn’t know anything and I couldn’t drive because I didn’t have a license. Today I feel like a Brazilian,” he added.

Romero also talked about the special moments he experienced at the club. “I’ve lived through many moments here, and choosing just one would be difficult. But the titles we’ve won always leave a special mark in my memory and stay with me forever.”

Among his achievements, the forward recalled his first title with Timão. “It was a very memorable day. Corinthians hadn’t won the Brazilian Championship in four years, and to win again with the club’s shirt, in my second year here, was very special.”

In his first spell, Romero also won the 2017 Brasileirão and the 2017 and 2018 Campeonato Paulista titles. Upon his return in 2023, he added the 2025 Paulistão to his trophy collection.

About this latest achievement, he highlighted: “After a long time, we won the Paulista when I came back to the club. When I had to leave Corinthians the first time, I left as a champion, and when I returned, we achieved this recognition again. This title was very important for me and for the club.”

He concluded by emphasizing the collective importance of these achievements. “These are achievements that are marked not only for me, but for the entire history of the club, because titles are the result of everyone’s effort. The club must always come first, above any board or director. That is the essence of team sports. As an athlete, I have the privilege of being part of something bigger.”
