Romeu Tuma Júnior has refused to recognise the meeting held on Monday night at Parque São Jorge that voted for his suspension as president of Corinthians’ Conselho Deliberativo, and says he will step aside only with a valid court order or via a procedure that strictly follows the club’s statute. According to Globo.com, he said he remains in post and will continue to perform the role’s institutional duties.
The session was convened by president Osmar Stabile to vote on Tuma Júnior’s removal. Of 290 councillors, 137 took part, with 115 in favour, 15 against and seven abstentions. Some members stayed away citing alleged breaches of statutory procedure.
Leonardo Pantaleão, the vice president and natural successor within the council, also questioned the legality of the meeting and said he will not assume the role unless and until a court recognises the move.
In his note, Tuma Júnior argued the convocation ignored the statute and that the conduct of proceedings, including a formal interruption, verbal abuse of board members and a restart led by someone without authority, rendered the vote invalid.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the statute, legal certainty and the club’s institutional stability, and said he will continue in the role performing its institutional acts. He set out his position in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.
