Precious few Man Utd fans will mourn the departure of Ruben Amorim, but us football writers and journalists certainly will.
The Portuguese tactician was one of the most quotable head coaches in the Premier League, providing brilliant soundbites and easy headlines on a weekly basis
It was fitting that the comments he made in his final press conference were his ultimate downfall, with the Red Devils sacking him just one day after he made a very pointed statement following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
It’s as good a time as any to look back at some of his best quotes from his 14-month stint at Old Trafford.
Just one month into the job, Amorim already sounded like the club had sucked the joy out of his life following a 4-3 defeat to Spurs in the League Cup:
“I will think about that tomorrow, tonight I don’t feel anything. There is nothing I can say to you about what is good. Tomorrow I can say a lot of things. Tonight we lost and then we have to take a night to think and then tomorrow we will have a lot of good things from this game.
“We cannot think in that way that winning silverware makes everything okay. It will be a long way, we are improving, our goal is to win the Premier League, how long it will take I don’t know.”
In December 2024, Amorim admitted that United were in a fight against relegation:
“That is really clear. It’s one of the most difficult moments in the history of Man Utd and we have to address it with honesty.”
He added: “We have to engage and focus on surviving.”
Amorim in January 2025 when United had won twice in ten games and were 13th in the Premier League table:
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that. We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United.”
Later that same month, Amorim admitted the team had not improved under him:
“It’s a little bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and to lose a lot of games.”
After losing the UEFA Europa League final to Spurs in May:
“If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation.” (He will receive £10m in compensation following his sacking.)
After losing to Grimsby Town in the League Cup in August:
“If we don’t show up, you can feel that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again.”
A few days later, Amorim admitted to sometimes hating his players and wanting to quit:
“To be really honest, every time that we have a defeat like that in the future, I’m going to be like that. I’m going to say sometimes I hate my players and sometimes I love my players. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.”
In September, Amorim insisted he would never change move away from his 3-4-2-1 system:
“No, no, no. No one. Not even the Pope will change…
“This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that.”
Eight days later, he admitted he did not know what will happen when United take to the pitch:
“It’s normal for the fans, they don’t know what is going to happen in the next game. To be completely honest, I have an idea, but I don’t know how it’s going to be and I’m the manager of the team.”
In October, he said he didn’t care about getting sacked:
“You fear to lose your job when you have to pay the bills and I don’t have that feeling. I just want to continue this. But when we don’t win games, that is the suffering that I have. It is not the fear of losing the job. I don’t care.
“I’m telling you when we finish the game and you can see me, I don’t care about my job. That hurt of not winning games or failing. That is the thing that hurts me the most.”
After Man Utd lost 1-0 to ten-man Everton in November, Amorim said his side were nowhere near the level of the best teams in the Premier League.
“We are not there. Not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league. We have a lot to do and we need to be perfect to win games. We were not perfect today.”
And finally, in his final press conference in charge, Amorim practically begged to be fired:
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach. I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel, Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United.
“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”
