It was a good day for the club’s summer arrivals as Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal at Old Trafford
Ruben Amorim praised two of Manchester United‘s new signings as the Red Devils boss reacted to his side’s much-needed 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Portuguese was said to be in danger of losing his job had United suffered their fourth league defeat of the campaign, but a goal from Benjamin Sesko and a clean sheet for debutant goalkeeper Senne Lammens helped ensure that was not the case.
“We were an adult team today,” Amorim said post-match. “We didn’t play well for all of the game but we had our moments and we defended well.”
On his new shot-stopper, who did well on the few occasions he was called upon during his Old Trafford bow, United’s manager added: “Senne did a great job, gave us confidence. It was a good day, not a perfect day, but to win like this, clean sheet, is important for our team.”
Amorim remained non-committal about whether the Belgian had fully taken over from Altay Bayindir as his first-choice ‘keeper, saying he “needs everyone to be ready to play” and that the “important thing is that the teammates helped Lammens to have a very good performance”.
After Mason Mount broke the deadlock early on against the Black Cats with a well-taken effort, newly-signed striker Sesko was on hand to double the hosts’ advantage just after the half-hour mark as a long throw-in from Diogo Dalot found its way to him six yards from the goal line.
It was the young Slovenian’s first goal at Old Trafford and his second time finding the back of the net in as many games, after he’d failed to score in his first six appearances in all competitions.
Sesko described his goal and the atmosphere afterwards as “amazing” and “unbelievable”, but his manager insisted he was most impressed with his new centre-forward’s work rate.
“The media puts a lot of pressure on the goals for the striker but for me it's the effort that is the most important thing,” Amorim said.
“Every time we kick the ball he was there, fighting for it - that's massive for us. To win the second ball and give us time to breathe. I'm really happy with that.”
He added: "[Sesko] has time, he's going to stay here for a lot of years.”
