Record writes that Ruben Amorim currently favours staying overseas rather than returning to Portugal, complicating Benfica’s hopes.
He is Rui Costa’s preferred candidate to succeed José Mourinho at Benfica, although Mourinho’s departure has not been confirmed. Convincing the former Sporting coach to come back to Portugal is described as a difficult task.
If no offer persuades him, Amorim is prepared to start the new season without a club. He is said to prefer remaining abroad, feeling he must prove his credentials after an inconsistent spell at Old Trafford that ended a few months ago.
Even so, his affinity with Benfica, he is an admitted Benfiquista, could yet shift his thinking if approached by Rui Costa. A move to Benfica would not be viewed as a betrayal, since he has never ruled out coaching the club he supports.
Amorim is considered a broadly accepted option within the Benfica hierarchy. Another candidate, Marco Silva, remains under consideration, though Benfica have not contacted Jorge Mendes about him. Silva is out of contract at Fulham but has an offer to extend.
