Rui Costa has moved to make clear Benfica have no issue with Jorge Mendes, seeking to calm talk of friction as key decisions on the head coach are under way.
Record reports that the Benfica president was irritated by stories of a supposed rift and therefore contacted Mendes directly to state there is no conflict or tension.
The narrative had gathered pace in recent days, with claims some within the SAD were unhappy with Mendes’ work. Costa moved to steady the situation.
He considers such speculation unhelpful for all involved and, above all, potentially damaging to Benfica’s image and interests as preparations for the new season intensify.
Mendes has been central to recent dossiers at the club. José Mourinho, who is leaving Benfica, and Marco Silva, linked as the leading candidate to replace him, are both represented by the Portuguese agent.
Given that context, Mendes has been key in talks between the parties, so Costa views it as vital to maintain a healthy institutional relationship and keep any notion of conflict at bay.
