Rui Costa said Benfica’s draw with Casa Pia has badly damaged their league title hopes, while insisting the team must respond.

Speaking after a meeting with the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group at the Assembly of the Republic on Wednesday, he addressed the setback. Asked if it compromises their ambitions, he said: “In a big way, in a big way. It was a more than unexpected draw that should not have happened, and it leaves us in an even more complicated situation than we were in,” he told A Bola.

He added that the team must keep going until the final weekend. “It is our obligation to fight to the end, our obligation to erase the image of what we did against Casa Pia.”

Costa also said the meeting’s agenda did not include refereeing, despite recent controversies involving clubs in the league.

His remarks come at a critical point in the season, with the margin for error shrinking. The draw in Rio Maior has increased pressure on José Mourinho’s side and made closing the gap to the top places more difficult.
