Arsenal fought back to snatch a 2-1 win over Real Madrid at Meadow Park in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
The first half saw chances at both ends, though clear openings were scarce. Arsenal looked lively through Olivia Smith, while Real Madrid’s Linda Caicedo and Naomie Feller consistently caused problems.
The breakthrough came just before the break when Caroline Weir volleyed home following a free-kick, putting Madrid ahead.
Arsenal responded after the restart. Chloe Kelly’s cross found Alessia Russo, who powered a header past goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez to level the score. Moments later, Beth Mead’s corner found Russo again, and she nodded Arsenal into the lead.
The Gunners saw out the remainder of the game despite a few nervy moments, keeping Madrid at bay.
The win lifts Arsenal’s position in the Champions League table, keeping a top-four finish within reach.
