Sam Kerr is targeting a fifth World Cup after Australia clinched qualification for the 2027 finals in Brazil. According to L'Équipe, they are the first team to secure their place on the pitch.
Joe Montemurro's side beat North Korea 2-1 in Perth on Friday, a result that also took the Matildas into the Asian Cup semi-finals. The win confirmed a ninth consecutive World Cup appearance.
Kerr, the 32-year-old Chelsea forward and Australia’s record scorer, led the team to the 2023 semi-finals. She now hopes to join the small group of players to feature at five tournaments.
She struck the second goal against North Korea and described qualification as the pinnacle for the squad. Kerr praised Brazil as a football nation and said a World Cup there should be extraordinary. She added that she hopes to be involved and relishes the chance to perform on the biggest stage.
Regular starters Caitlin Foord of Arsenal and Emily van Egmond of Leicester City could also reach a fifth World Cup.
