Football League World takes a look at three League One clubs who should sign Sam Nombe from Rotherham United this summer

Rotherham United striker Sam Nombe should push to leave the Millers this summer if they suffer relegation from League One to League Two.

The South Yorkshire outfit have sacked Matt Hamshaw, meaning they are now searching for their fifth permanent manager since Paul Warne left the New York Stadium in 2022.

Meanwhile, Rotherham's 5-0 defeat to Peterborough United, which proved to be the final straw for Hamshaw, drew the Millers ever closer to League Two.

The New York Stadium outfit were only relegated from the Championship in 2024, while Nombe has remained a reliable goalscorer in League One despite his injury struggles this term.

He provided yet another reminder of his strong attacking ability when he notched a brace in a 2-2 draw with promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers on 14 March.

With Rotherham's plight in mind, Football League World takes a look at three third-tier outfits who should plot moves for the 27-year-old this summer.

Barnsley

Barnsley have struggled for consistency this season, which has damaged their chances of landing a play-off spot for the second time in three campaigns.

The Tykes have been incredibly reliant on the impressive attacking output of David McGoldrick, but the 38-year-old is out of contract this summer.

Fellow attacker Davis Keillor-Dunn joined Wrexham in the winter transfer window, providing all the more reason for Conor Hourihane to bolster his forward line this summer, and Nombe could be the answer.

Joining one of Rotherham's South Yorkshire neighbours would make sense for Nombe from a logistical point of view.

Wigan Athletic

Gary Caldwell's Wigan Athletic have been on the up since the former Scotland international returned to the Brick Community Stadium to replace former boss Ryan Lowe, but remain threatened by relegation.

If Caldwell successfully steers the Latics away from the drop zone, Nombe is an attractive attacking option for the Greater Manchester club this summer.

Joe Taylor has been prolific since joining Wigan on loan from Huddersfield Town in the winter transfer window, but acquiring his permanent services may be beyond their financial capabilities.

Nombe's Rotherham exploits suggest that he could be an ideal Taylor alternative for the Latics, who need a new permanent striker ahead of next season, thanks to Christian Saydee and Dara Costelloe's respective struggles.

Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient are one of the sides alongside Wigan in the battle to avoid relegation to League Two, even though they reached the League One play-off final just last season.

Orient appear likely to avoid the drop, thanks to the services of striker Dom Ballard, who has arguably been the best forward in the third tier this term.

Ballard's hat-trick against Wimbledon on 17 March provided yet another reminder of just how good the 20-year-old has been this season, and the youngster is certain to have attracted Championship admirers.

Richie Wellens' side will likely struggle to retain the former Southampton man's services this summer, which will leave them in need of finding a new striker.
