The Milan City Council has approved the sale of the San Siro area to Milan and Inter, which, according to reports, will have a 71,500 capacity and be ready in 2031: here’s all you need to know.

Milan and Inter are prepared to build their new stadium in the San Siro area, with the iconic Stadio Meazza expected to be demolished between 2031 and 2032.

After the approval from the City Council on Monday night, the sale to the Milanese clubs must be finalised by November 10, so the next 40 days will be used to get banks’ approval and complete the paperwork.

November 10 is when the Stadio Meazza will formally become a monument of historic importance, so Milan and Inter must complete the purchase before that date. Otherwise, if the Meazza is still publicly owned on November 10, the stadium can no longer be demolished.

The new arena will be built in the parking area of the Meazza, allowing Inter and Milan to play in their current home until the new one is ready.

Sky and Gazzetta report that construction work will likely begin in the first half of 2027. The Milanese clubs have already signed agreements with architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA, and although there still isn’t a rendering of the new stadium, it is known that the new San Siro will have a capacity of 71,500.

Construction works are expected to begin in the first half of 2027 and be completed by 2031, making Milan one of the host cities at the 2032 Euros.
