Santiago Montiel has won the FIFA Puskás Award for the unforgettable overhead kick that delivered Independiente’s win over Independiente Rivadavia.

According to SuperDepor.com, the forward struck 12 minutes into the second half of a tight round of 16 tie in Avellaneda, part of the Torneo Apertura in the 2025 Liga Profesional.

After a corner and a short clearance by the Mendoza side, Montiel beat Sebastián Villa to the dropping ball on the edge of the box.

With his back to goal, the 25-year-old from Gregorio de Laferrere executed a perfect overhead kick that arced over goalkeeper Ezequiel Centurión.

He broke the deadlock and secured victory for Independiente on Sunday 11 May.

That result sent Julio Vaccari’s team into the quarter-finals of the Torneo Apertura, where they defeated Boca 1-0 at La Bombonera.

The strike went viral on social media, FIFA nominated it for the season’s best and on Tuesday the Argentine forward was confirmed as the winner.
