Santos fans staged a fresh protest at Vila Belmiro on Thursday, targeting the Deliberative Council and the administration of Marcelo Teixeira during the second day of meetings on amendments to the club’s new statute. According to Globo.com, organised groups gathered as councillors convened.
Chants against the president and some councillors accompanied the demonstration, which began while the session, starting at 19h Brasília time, was under way. It was almost a repeat of scenes on Monday.
The main flashpoint was an amendment requiring two Council terms before a member can run for the Santos presidency, after an initial draft had set the bar at three.
At present, anyone seeking the club’s executive post must have 10 years of membership. One banner asked who stood to gain from making candidacies harder.
Councillors also backed terms that would allow whoever manages Santos’ football to hold up to 80% of the share, previously capped at 49%, leaving 20% with the associative club. All council decisions will later be put to members for approval en bloc, a step criticised by fans and opponents of the current administration.
Voting on the statute continues next Thursday, 28th, as the Council enters the final stretch of its meetings.
