São Paulo's Public Prosecutor's Office has stepped up its inquiry into more than R$ 3.4 million withdrawn in cash from Corinthians between March 2018 and 2023, a sum worth R$ 7.3 million in current terms. Depositions for former presidents Andrés Sanchez and Duilio Monteiro Alves, plus former directors and staff, are set for 9 April.

The money was handed to João Odair de Souza, known as Caveira, who led club security under Andrés and Duilio. No proof has been provided of where the funds went and there is suspicion of misappropriation. Authorisations were given by then manager Roberto Gavioli and former finance chiefs Matías Romano Ávila and Wesley Melo, who will also be heard.

'At weekends, holidays and during protests we hired many freelance security staff,' he said. 'Before I took over a company did this, charging about R$ 450 and paying R$ 120 to R$ 150. Many were off-duty police and they do not issue invoices,' he added, speaking to ge.

Club records show some days featured multiple withdrawals, including R$ 129.3 thousand in October 2023 and R$ 529 on 29 October 2020. De Souza has been named as an investigated party but has not yet been summoned to testify.

Separately, former driver Denilson Grillo received more than R$ 1.2 million in cash across three years, and investigators suspect shell companies were used to justify spending and divert funds. Andrés and Duilio are also defendants for alleged misappropriation linked to the use of Corinthians credit cards.
