Schalke 04 have suffered a double setback involving summer transfer targets Robin Gosens and Jesper Lindstrøm. Gosens will remain sidelined until further notice after sustaining a thigh injury during Saturday’s 5–0 friendly victory over Hessen Kassel. Jesper Lindstrøm’s proposed move to Gelsenkirchen has, meanwhile, collapsed amid problems negotiating a purchase clause in the Danish international’s loan agreement.

Schalke did not disclose the precise severity of Gosens’ injury. The Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung nevertheless reports that Gosens is expected to miss several weeks rather than several months. The former German international should still miss much of the remaining preseason, including friendly matches against former club Atalanta and Real Madrid. His availability for Schalke’s competitive opener against Hallescher FC in the DFB-Pokal on August 24 is not presently considered to be in danger.

Gosens had only recently made his first Schalke appearance during a 3–1 friendly victory over Fagiano Okayama. He played the opening half and later discussed rebuilding his fitness and adapting to his new teammates.

In the case of Lindstrøm, the Danish international had been at Schalke’s headquarters since Friday and was expected to undergo his medical ahead of an initial loan from Napoli. Transfermarkt now reports that Schalke have withdrawn from negotiations after failing to reach an agreement with the Serie A club.

Schalke reportedly wanted a €5m purchase option that could become obligatory under specific conditions. Napoli instead pushed for an obligation tied to a lower appearance threshold.

The Royal Blues had already suspended talks after Napoli allegedly attempted to alter previously discussed terms.

Lindstrøm was personally informed on Monday that the transfer would not proceed and is now expected to return to Italy.
