Sky Germany reports that Schalke were once close to signing Deniz Undav during a window from 2020 to 2022, when he was at Union St. Gilloise in Belgium.
The Gelsenkirchen club had contacted the striker in that period, but he was considered too expensive to pursue.

"Absolutely. If they get promoted, I'd love to. Although: I'd even move to the second division for Schalke." The remarks were made to Sport1 in 2021.
Undav did not join Schalke, instead he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion, then to VfB Stuttgart.
He is now a Germany international.
