FPF refereeing director Duarte Gomes has issued a clarification to match officials after Sporting v Benfica, addressing Andreas Schjelderup’s alleged encroachment on a contentious penalty.

Record writes that the refereeing council judged Schjelderup’s movement not to have affected the play, as Anatoliy Trubin had already saved Luis Suárez’s spot kick, denying the opening goal.

Gomes has circulated footage to league referees outlining the base procedure for assessing encroachment, in particular what to do depending on whether a penalty results in a goal or not.

The Laws of the Game already set out guidance for such situations in the section on penalties. Spanish referee Iturralde González holds the opposite interpretation, believing the kick should have been retaken.

José Mourinho’s side won at Alvalade through goals from Schjelderup on 27 minutes and Rafa Silva on 90+3. The victory moved Benfica provisionally into second in Liga Portugal Betclic on 72 points, with Sporting able to reclaim the place because they have one game in hand.
