Brazil swept past Scotland 3-0 in the World Cup group finale, Vinicius struck twice and Bruno Guimaraes ran the game. L'Équipe rated Guimaraes outstanding and Scott McKenna off colour.
Vinicius struck on 7 after Rayan’s press forced a defensive error. A second was chalked off for a foul on 22, before he headed in Guimaraes’s fine cross for 2-0 on 45+3. Guimaraes made nine recoveries in midfield.
After the break, Lucas Paqueta slipped a superb pass for Vinicius on 51 but the winger failed to complete his hat-trick. Guimaraes then freed Matheus Cunha with a no-look ball for 3-0 on 60, before Paqueta made way for Gabriel Martinelli on 66. Vinicius later missed another one-on-one with Angus Gunn on 78.
Cunha had begun the tournament on the bench and is making himself indispensable. He also won the tackle that launched the move for 2-0 and was replaced by Neymar on 76 to a huge ovation.
Returning from injury, McKenna’s poor pass was blocked for the opener on 7 and he gave too much space thereafter, then was unsettled again before the third. Scott McTominay, the Napoli midfielder, struggled to impose himself and passed up three openings, heading at Alisson on 49, denied again on 65 and slicing wide on 72. Jack Hendry faded after being caught out by Vinicius on 22, while Nathan Patterson misread Guimaraes’s centre and lost the aerial duel for 2-0 on 45+3.
