Sean Longstaff has stepped up his pre-season work on Tyneside as he looks to stake a stronger claim in Daniel Farke’s midfield at Leeds United.

According to Leeds Live, Leeds have prioritised midfield reinforcements, submitting two bids for Shea Charles, while winger Harry Wilson has signed as a free agent after leaving Fulham.

That competition raises the bar for those already in place, including Longstaff, who arrived last summer from Newcastle United with top-flight experience but featured in just over half of the league games, often from the bench.

A bit-part role was among the factors behind his Newcastle departure, and the 28-year-old wants a more established place. He has been working on his fitness for the past few weeks to be ready when pre-season begins next Monday.

Longstaff has been spotted at Newcastle United’s Under-21s base at Whitley Park, a familiar setting. He has been making use of the facilities there to ensure he is primed to impress when the squad reconvenes.
