Manchester City edged past Leeds United 1-0 in a tense Premier League encounter at Elland Road, a result that tightened the title race and cut Arsenal’s lead at the summit to two points. In a contest defined by resilience and nerve, City found a way, even without their injured talisman Erling Haaland.
For long stretches, Leeds United were the sharper side. Energy surged from the stands and into Daniel Farke’s players, who pressed high and attacked with purpose. Yet when the decisive moment arrived, it belonged to City.
The breakthrough came just before half time. Rayan Ait Nouri fizzed a low delivery into the penalty area and Antoine Semenyo reacted first, stretching to guide the ball home. It was his sixth Premier League goal since arriving from Bournemouth in January, and it carried immense weight.
City had laboured in the early exchanges. Dominic Calvert Lewin spurned a golden opportunity inside four minutes, poking wide from eight yards after connecting with Brenden Aaronson’s cross. The former Everton forward later dragged another effort wide from a difficult angle, unable to add to his tally of ten league goals this season.
Those missed chances lingered. At this level, against a side of City’s pedigree, wastefulness is rarely forgiven.

Leeds United played with courage and urgency. Aaronson went close again, prodding wide during a frantic first half spell, while James Justin saw an effort smothered by Gianluigi Donnarumma. The crowd sensed vulnerability in City’s ranks, particularly in the absence of Haaland, who missed out through injury.
Nico O’Reilly nearly doubled City’s advantage when he rose to meet a Matheus Nunes cross, only for Karl Darlow to produce a sharp reflex save. Moments later, play paused briefly to allow players observing Ramadan to break their fast, a stoppage met with audible frustration from sections of the home support.
Leeds continued to probe after the interval. Substitute Jaka Bijol headed wide late on as the hosts searched desperately for parity. Effort was abundant, composure less so.
Victories of this nature often shape Premier League campaigns. Manchester City were second best for periods, yet they departed West Yorkshire with three points. Pep Guardiola’s side remain firmly in contention with ten games remaining, applying fresh pressure on Arsenal ahead of their clash with Chelsea.
The absence of Haaland posed questions, particularly with Nottingham Forest next on the horizon. Guardiola has suggested the Norwegian is not fully fit, leaving uncertainty over his immediate return. In his stead, Semenyo delivered a poacher’s finish that justified City’s investment and highlighted their squad depth.
For Leeds United, frustration mingles with pride. They have now lost six consecutive Premier League matches against Man City, a run that underlines the gulf in ruthlessness. Still, they remain six points clear of the relegation zone, a buffer that may prove decisive in the weeks ahead.
At Elland Road, Leeds United showed heart. Manchester City showed steel. In a title race decided by fine margins, the 1-0 scoreline may carry significance long after the final whistle.
