Semi-automatic offside debuts in Brazilian Série A, two goals ruled out, one upheld | OneFootball

The 20th round marked the debut of semi-automatic offside in the Brazilian Série A, delivering two disallowed goals and one validation.

According to Globo.com, the system was first applied in Santos 2-2 Chapecoense to validate Marcinho’s strike early in the second half. The 3D line assessed Giovanni Augusto’s position when he received the pass before supplying the assist.

On Sunday, at 10 minutes of the first half, Bahia’s Alejo Veliz had an equaliser chalked off against Corinthians via the technology. With Corinthians 1-0 up, the 3D graphic showed Erick Pulga’s toe ahead of the last defender in the build-up. Bahia later saw a Willian José effort ruled offside on the field and confirmed by VAR.

At the Maracanã, Flamengo and São Paulo were level at 1-1 when, on 45 minutes of the second half, Samuel Lino netted what would have been the winner. The semi-automatic offside detected Wallace Yan marginally ahead, and the goal was cancelled.

The CBF regards the rollout as progress and some coaches welcomed it, yet debate among supporters continues. On social media, complaints focus on the broadcast showing the 3D offside line but not the exact frame of the final pass.

The tool will now be used in all Série A matches. The CBF plans to deploy it in later Copa do Brasil rounds and is evaluating additions for 2027, including a referee cam and goal-line technology.
