AFCON 2025 reaches its conclusion with a heavyweight showdown

A tournament that started just before Christmas and has provided plenty of entertainment reaches it’s conclusion in Rabat, Morocco where a new AFCON winner will be crowned after holders Ivory Coast were eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

Wednesday’s semi-final ties saw Senegal beat Egypt before Morocco overcame Nigeria to set up a heavyweight showdown between two of Africa’s biggest nations.

The Lions of Teranga left it late to knock out Egypt, with Sadio Mane scoring the winner 12 minutes from time to spare fans from watching a further half-hour of what was a truly turgid game of football.

Hosts Morocco meanwhile needed penalties to overcome Nigeria in Rabat later on Wednesday.

Youssef En-Nesyri netted the winning spot-kick at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium to send Walid Regragui’s side into Sunday’s final.

Left-back Bruno Onyemaechi missed the crucial penalty for the Super Eagles, seeing his effort saved by Bono.

The Atlas Lions had fallen behind after Hamza Igamane had been denied by Stanley Nwabali, but Samuel Chukwueze instantly spurned the Nigerians’ advantage as his tame effort was straight at the Moroccan shot-stopper.

Now, it leaves the hosts with one more opponent to overcome in order to claim a first AFCON title in 50 years, with their one and only crown coming all the way back in 1976.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game…

Senegal vs Morocco team news

Senegal had made it to the AFCON semi-finals with an impressive injury record, but picked up one absentee and two suspensions against Egypt.

Two of those are down to captain Kalidou Koulibaly, who was suspended for the final after being booked early on and was subsequently withdrawn with what appeared to be a groin injury.

The other was down to Habib Diarra, suspended after being booked for dissent.

Pape Thiaw may be inspired to pull in fresh legs after his side appeared lethargic and devoid of inspiration in the semi-finals. Nicolas Jackson in particular will be under pressure after he struggled to upset the Pharaohs backline.

There were no injury worries for the Atlas Lions against Nigeria, nor did they pick up any bookings that could see any key players suspended.

They were the better of the two sides in a poor semi-final clash, so Regagrui could switch up his team selection after they struggled to create any real goalscoring opportunities.

Senegal vs Morocco prediction

Morocco’s home form is incredible, having not lost on home soil since November 2009, when Cameroon beat them in World Cup qualifying.

Since then, they have gone unbeaten, and that record could see them smash that 50-year drought without the African crown.

They will need to get past a star-studded Senegalese side that boasts countless match-winners, including former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who stepped up to the plate when it mattered to see the Lions into the final.

Senegal to win, 1-0.
