Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in Rabat to lift the Africa Cup of Nations, their second crown in three editions since 2021. Olympique Lyonnais defender Moussa Niakhaté won the title with the Lions of Teranga.

According to Le Progres, after Lyon’s match against Brest, Paulo Fonseca and his Lyon team-mates said they were very happy for him. Around the club there was a desire to toast two wins on Sunday night, their own against Brest and Niakhaté’s triumph.

Niakhaté joined up with Senegal in mid December, arriving with clear ambition. The mood at Lyon reflected his achievement.

Fonseca offered his congratulations, saying the squad checked Senegal’s progress straight after full time and praising Niakhaté as a consummate professional who deserves the moment. He added that Niakhaté will stay in Senegal for a short spell, so it will be difficult to have him for Bern on Thursday and perhaps Metz as well.

Team-mate Pavel Sulc said he was happy for Niakhaté and did not know when the defender will return, adding he hopes it is soon. He recognised it is a moment of joy and that the Senegalese public will want to celebrate their heroes at length.
