Senegal’s World Cup campaign has been clouded by complaints of poor federation support, with head coach Pape Thiaw currently working without a contract and bonus payments left unpaid.

They began with an expected 3-1 defeat to France. Sport News Africa reports that logistics have also been problematic for the squad in New Jersey. Expectations had been high after beating Morocco to win a controversial Africa Cup of Nations months earlier.

Figures around the team have criticised the backing from their federation. Thiaw’s agreement expired months ago and it is alleged he has missed multiple salary payments. Players did not receive the bonuses for their Africa Cup of Nations triumph. There have been suggestions inside the camp that payments may be pending amid off-field uncertainty involving Morocco. The agreed bonuses for World Cup qualification have also not been settled.

The federation president has also come under scrutiny. The report cites a low-quality hotel in New Jersey and complaints about food provision. With no team chef sent, several players are said to be sourcing meals outside the hotel.

Senegal now face Norway for a place in the next round, while attempting to navigate these off-pitch issues.
