Manchester United had all of their new signings to thank after a scrappy win on Merseyside but it was goalkeeper Senne Lammens who really caught the eye.
The Red Devils began the season with André Onana and Altay Bayindir in goal, a spell in which 11 goals were conceded in just six games with only Wolves (13), Burnley (13), and West Ham (14) shipping more in that time.
United gave Lammens his debut against Sunderland which was the team's first clean sheet of the season. More than that, Old Trafford got to see a cool, calm goalkeeper who was able to reduce the anxiety in the stadium.
Against Everton on Monday, Lammens was given another test for what was an unproven young goalkeeper signed from Royal Antwerp. The Belgian had to deal with the Toffees on his toes for every one of the 10 corners that he managed to deal with without getting flustered or frustrated by the usual Royal Rumble style corner kicks we've become used to this season in the Premier League.
His shot stopping was on display making fine stops to deny long range efforts from James Garner, Michael Keane, and Tyrique George.
Since Lammens' debut, United have conceded 26 goals in 21 games, a reducing from conceding 1.83 goals per game to a much more manageable 1.23 – a stat that has also been helped by the return to fitness of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez, although the Argentinian missed on on Monday.
Perhaps most importantly, the signing of Lammens has suddenly made Manchester United very difficult to beat. In fact, no team has lost fewer games (two, the same as Arsenal) than the Red Devils since the Belgian made his debut.
The clean sheet stats might not be there just yet, with the 1-0 away to Everton the only clean sheet on the road this season, but Lammens' impact can't be underestimated.
