Serie A | Lazio 2-2 Parma: Pedro rescues a point amid crisis

Pedro bagged a quickfire brace to fight back from 2-0 down and snatch a point against Parma, but the result significantly slows Lazio’s progress for European places.

The Aquile got back on track after Europa League quarter-final elimination by beating Genoa 2-0, despite Reda Belahyane’s red card and consequent ban. Nuno Tavares, Manuel Lazzari and Patric injuries all created a crisis in defence. Cristian Chivu turned the Ducali’s season around, culminating in Wednesday’s win over Juventus, breaking away from the danger zone. The absentee list kept growing with Alessandro Vogliacco, Adrian Bernabé, Matteo Cancellieri, Valentin Mihaila, Nahuel Estevez, Gabriel Charpentier and Yordan Osorio among those injured.

It was a shock start at the Stadio Olimpico, as in the third minute Emanuele Valeri got down the left and rolled across, finding Jacob Ondrejka in acres of space inside the penalty area to control and sweep into the far bottom corner.

Taty Castellanos fired straight at Zion Suzuki, while Nicolò Rovella got the finish all wrong from the edge of the area.

Castellanos had the ball in the net on 38 minutes when sliding onto the Mario Gila through ball, but he was caught offside.

Boulaye Dia blasted high and wide, but Parma doubled their lead within seconds of the restart. Ondrejka gathered down the left in midfield and tried to thread through, but when it was intercepted and bounced back into his path, he fired the right-foot curler into the far top corner from the edge of the box.

It was so nearly 3-0 a few minutes later, as Mateo Pellegrino sprung the offside trap to go clear on goal, denied by a desperate Christos Mandas one-handed save.

Pedro dinked a pass over the top that bounced heavily, so Luca Pellegrini at full stretch could only prod it into the arms of Zion Suzuki.

Moments later, Gustav Isaksen also tested Suzuki from close range with the outside of the boot, but Mandas flew for a desperate fingertip save to push the Dennis Man strike over the bar.

Matias Vecino pulled a hard and low ball across from the right that practically hit Tijjani Noslin, who couldn’t redirect it towards goal from five yards.

Lazio eventually got one back with three substitutes combining. Matias Vecino’s long cross found Noslin’s acrobatic volley, forcing a great save from Suzuki, but only into the path of Pedro to pounce on the rebound.

Pedro completed the comeback from 0-2 to 2-2 in the space of five minutes, this time steering his looping header into the far top corner from a Luca Pellegrini cross.

Lazio were pouring forward suddenly with Suzuki pushing the Guendouzi scorcher round the post, but this left gaps at the back and Man drilled wide after shrugging off the last man on the counter-attack.

Alessio Romagnoli had penalty appeals when he went toe to toe with a Parma player for the same ball, but the referee and VAR shrugged them away.

It was on edge to the final whistle and ultimately the Aquile were disappointed with the result, despite trailing 2-0 until the 78th minute. They are all too aware a win would’ve seen them leapfrog Bologna into fifth, but instead they are caught by Roma in joint sixth, dropping down to seventh due to their inferior head-to-head record with the Eternal City rivals.
