Serie A leaders Roma got the better of Como in a gripping contest that produced a 4-3 scoreline. The result keeps Roma six points clear at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, second-placed Inter pulled off a 5-2 victory over Lazio on Serie A match-day 18. They will be relying on the leaders to drop points if they want to close the gap in this title race, though. Here’s how the latest batch of results in Italy’s top flight unfolded.

Roma close in on title

Roma’s Emilie Haavi took advantage of Como’s failure to deal with corners to score twice in quick succession in Friday’s clash. Undeterred by Haavi’s brace, Como staged a dramatic turnaround to take a 3-2 lead into the break. Alex Chidiac pulled a goal back, before she turned to provider for Nadine Nischler to fire home from the edge of the box. Fortesa Berisha then saw her cross deflect in off Roma defender Winonah Heatley, leaving Roma with work to do in the second period.

The title hopefuls ultimately rose to the challenge, scoring two goals inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Evelyne Viens swept the ball in from Haavi’s low cross to restore parity. Alayah Pilgrim went on to score what proved to be the winning goal. After stealing possession outside of the box, the Switzerland international smashed a fierce strike in at the near post to seal all three points.

Five-star Inter dispatch Lazio

Roma’s closest challengers, Inter, prevailed in Saturday’s nine-goal thriller against Lazio. Tessa Wullaert opened the scoring from the penalty spot, before Lina Magull and Marie Detruyer found the net to make it 3-0 inside the opening 30 minutes. After using half-time to reset, Lazio flew out of the blocks to pull two goals back before the hour mark. Clarisse Le Bihan let fly from distance within seven minutes of the restart, with her effort proving too strong for Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir. Elisabetta Oliviero then, arguably, conjured up an even better strike, thumping a bouncing ball on the edge of the box out of Rúnarsdóttir’s reach.

Unfortunately for Lazio, their fightback was effectively ended by Martina Tomaselli’s 80th-minute effort. A late Oliviero own goal ensured the three points for Inter, who remain five points clear of third-placed Juventus and six points away from Roma. As for Lazio, they are now five points adrift of the top three with four games to play.

Parma boost survival hopes

In the battle for survival, Parma moved six points clear of danger with a 2-0 home win over relegation rivals Ternana. Iris Rabot opened the scoring inside the first minute of Saturday’s home clash. The 25-year-old steered her looping header into the awaiting net after Ternana failed to deal with an inswinging corner. Manon Uffren had the chance to double the lead from the penalty spot after the referee visited the pitchside monitor and spotted a shirt pull in the box. However, Katia Schroffenegger was equal to the penalty, springing to her left to keep her side firmly in the contest.

Unfortunately for the Ternana goalkeeper, there was nothing she could do to prevent Chiara Vigilucci from inadvertently diverting the ball into her own net in the 76th minute. That moment ended the visitors’ hopes of extending their four-game winless run. While Parma move up to ninth, Ternana drop to 10th spot and remain four points clear of the relegation spot.

Genoa edge closer to the drop

Genoa’s survival hopes were dented by a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Napoli. Kinga Kozak required just five minutes to open the scoring, before Cecilie Fløe took control with a stunning hat-trick. After doubling Napoli’s advantage in the first period, Fløe grabbed her second in the 77th minute. The Denmark international pounced on a poor clearance to stroke the ball beyond Camilla Forcinella.

As it proved, the Napoli star saved her best effort for the final goal of the game. Driving in from the left flank, Fløe skipped away from two Genoa defenders, briefly ceding possession to her teammate Marija Banušić, before producing a composed finish from the return pass. Alice Söndergaard denied Napoli a clean sheet with a stoppage-time goal, but the late effort ultimately offered little consolation to the relegation-threatened visitors. As for Napoli, they are in fourth place and three points adrift of Juventus in the race for European qualification.

AC Milan, Juventus emerge victorious

Elsewhere, AC Milan made light work of their away meeting with Sassuolo. Sara Stokić netted a brace before Thea Kyvåg wrapped up the win with her third goal in four matches. As a result of the victory, Milan climb up to fifth spot, while Sassuolo are down in 11th place and four points above basement side Genoa.

Juventus and Fiorentina faced off just days after the former completed a 4-1 aggregate victory in the Coppa Italia semi-finals against the Viola. Unfortunately for Fiorentina, they experienced more disappointment at the hands of the reigning Serie A champions. Lindsey Thomas put Juventus ahead in the 13th minute, before Iris Ómarsdóttir headed the home side level in the latter stages of the first period. Juventus bounced back from that setback to restore their slender advantage just before the hour mark. Cecilia Salvai steered home Lia Wälti’s driven ball into the box to seal all three points for the visitors. As a result, seventh-placed Fiorentina are now six points adrift of Juventus in third position.

Did you know?

Sassuolo have scored just three goals across their nine home league games, a significant drop from the 10 Serie A goals they have scored on the road this season.
