Fresh embarrassment this week, Santos were held by Recoleta's reserves at Vila Belmiro in the 2026 Copa Sudamericana.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the list starts with the unprecedented 2023 relegation to Série B. Santos needed one win from the last three but lost to Athletico-PR, Fluminense and Fortaleza, finishing 17th on 43 points, one behind Bahia.
There have been four transfer bans for unpaid debts, involving Huachipato for Soteldo, coach Fabian Bustos, Krasnodar for Cueva and Estoril for João Basso. More could follow this year over sums owed to Monaco for Jean Lucas and coach Pedro Caixinha.
Continental setbacks include a 2021 Libertadores group exit after 37 years, third behind Boca Juniors and Barcelona of Ecuador with six points. In 2022, Deportivo Táchira advanced in the quarter-finals at Vila on penalties after a 1-1 draw, despite 14 straight defeats in Brazil, six scored and 51 conceded.
In the Paulistão, Santos went out in the first phase in 2021, 2022 and 2023, twice dodging relegation on the final day. Key results were a 2-0 win over São Bento in 2021, a 3-2 escape against Água Santa in 2022 and a 3-0 loss at Ituano in 2023.
The decade also brought a 7-1 thrashing at Internacional in 2023, marked by errors from goalkeeper Wladimir, the biggest Internacional win in the fixture. This year's Sudamericana start has yielded one point, a 1-0 defeat at Deportivo Cuenca and a 1-1 home draw with Recoleta's reserves.
