Sevilla have slipped into the bottom three after Elche’s 1-0 win over Valencia, hours before they host Atlético Madrid at 21:00 on matchday 31. It marks a grim turn for the club and midfielder Lucien Agoumé.
L'Équipe notes that Sevilla had been in the drop zone only once this season, before matchday three.
A European heavyweight, Sevilla have lifted seven Europa Leagues between 2006 and 2023, and were in the Champions League two seasons ago. They now face the threat of a first relegation since 1999.
They are on a five-match winless run despite a recent change in the dugout, with Matias Almeyda replaced by Luis Garcia Plaza.
Tension has escalated among supporters, who vented their anger after a 1-0 defeat at bottom side Oviedo last week.
