Sheffield United have had a woeful start to the campaign with a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Bristol City at Bramall Lane being followed by a 1-0 loss to Swansea City in south Wales, with those defeats sandwiching a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City in the first round of the EFL Cup at St Andrew’s.

The Blades have yet to play well for seemingly longer than the odd five-minute period in their opening few matches across all competitions, and the pressure is already growing on new boss Ruben Selles.

Selles was appointed over the summer, following the departure of Chris Wilder, who led Sheffield United to the Championship play-off final last season, where they suffered a dramatic defeat to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium.

The squad has changed quite a lot, and it has become a lot younger, and Selles is struggling to get to grips with it just yet, but the potential arrival of Ben Mee is one that could help ease those issues.

Ben Mee would bring experience to Sheffield United

35-year-old Ben Mee, who came through the academy at Manchester City, before a loan stint at Leicester City, spent over a decade at Turf Moor, making over 375 appearances for the Clarets.

He has spent the last few seasons still in the Premier League with Brentford, but began to play less throughout last year and eventually departed at the end of the campaign.

Mee has been without a club throughout the summer but has been linked via The Star with a move to South Yorkshire, and it would be a signing that FLW Fan Pundit Jimmy, of Blades Ramble, believes would be a good one for the club.

Jimmy says: “In regard to Ben Mee; needs must, I think, to be honest.

“I think it is a good, strong addition. It’s a leader, but it’s someone who also hasn’t had a pre-season and will be expected to go into a very high-press, high-tempo side, and that would have to change everything in regard to the high-line we play currently.

“I do like him, though, as a signing, because we certainly need more leaders in the side, and in and around the club, to be honest.

“We’re a very young side and there’s no one really to pick the players up when the result doesn’t go our way. You can see at the moment that the players' heads have dropped already and there’s no one. There’s not a Chris Morgan or a Billy Sharp there to pick them up and go again.

“Ben Mee would be a welcome addition for me. Whether he ends up being our starter or not is yet to be seen but, certainly at the moment, he’d be in our best eleven.”

Mee would be a part of a busy Sheffield United summer

Sheffield United are looking for defensive reinforcements this summer after the sale of Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord, as well as loanees Harry Souttar, Rob Holding, Harry Clarke and Alfie Gilchrist having all returned to their parent clubs.

United have been able to bring in centre-back Tyler Bindon on loan from Nottingham Forest, but there remains a need to strengthen their back-line.

It has been a busy and unusual summer of recruitment at United, with the club also bringing in Ehije Ukaki and Mihail Polendakov from Bulgarian sides Botev Plovdiv and Septemvri Sofia respectively. Djibril Soumare has joined on loan from Braga, too.

Louie Barry has signed on loan from Aston Villa, having worked with Selles in the second-half of last season at Hull City, too, but there is still a fair bit of work seemingly to be done.

In terms of other departures, they have also sold Vinicius Souza to Wolfsburg and Kieffer Moore to Wrexham, with captain Jack Robinson also linked with the Red Dragons.
