With today marking transfer deadline day and Sheffield United hit by two key injuries during Saturday’s draw with Millwall, the Blades have moved swiftly to ramp up their transfer activity.
United have already completed a deadline-day signing, bringing in defender Leo Hjelde from Sunderland on loan. Manager Chris Wilder acted quickly following Sam McCallum’s injury at The Den, with Hjelde arriving to bolster cover down the left-hand side.
The 22-year-old is a familiar face to Blades supporters. Last season, Hjelde made 19 appearances as Sunderland secured promotion to the Premier League at United’s expense, with his final outing coming as a late substitute in the play-off final at Wembley.
Further additions could yet follow before the window slams shut. Sheffield United’s reported move for Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell is said to be gathering pace, with The Star reporting that a medical has already been scheduled.
The Blades are also actively searching for reinforcement in defensive midfield. United are understood to be progressing in talks over a deal for Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, although there is competition from clubs across Europe, according to Mike McGrath. It is being reported that Manchester City are prepared to cover a large portion of Phillips’ wages in order to help the deal go through.

Alongside the incoming business, there has also been an outgoing at Bramall Lane. United’s summer AI signing Ehije Ukaki has departed on a temporary basis, joining Atromitos of the Greek Super League on loan until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old Nigerian has made just one appearance for the Blades since arriving from Botev Plovdiv last June.
With the transfer window closing later today, Sheffield United supporters can expect more developments to emerge from Bramall Lane as Wilder looks to strengthen his squad for the remainder of the campaign.
