Blades' left-back Rhys Norrington-Davies has spent the 25/26 season on loan in West London

Sheffield United face a challenging summer transfer window with their Premier League parachute payments coming to an end.

Seeing as though COH Sports sanctioned the spending of a reported £19.1m on just six players last summer, when Ruben Selles was at the helm, it's unlikely that Chris Wilder will get anywhere near that amount to spend.

This means that the South Yorkshire club could do with recouping or making as much money as possible on fringe players - one of whom is currently on loan at Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers, in Rhys Norrington-Davies.

But a recent transfer report involving the Hoops could mean that the R's may have no interest now in trying to sign the Welshman permanently.

How Rhys Norrington-Davies has fared on loan at Queens Park Rangers

Rhys Norrington-Davies arrived at Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan from Sheffield United last August, providing much-needed competition and depth at left-back.

Having played for Blades 17 times in 24/25, the 26-year-old was more than eager to get back playing regularly under Julien Stephan, telling the West London outfit upon signing, "I'm coming in here to play football."

It's fair to say he's done just that. The left-back has featured in 35 Championship games for QPR so far this season, with 30 of those being starts. In fact, it's the largest number of games Norrington-Davies has played in for four full seasons, since playing 26 times for United in 21/22.

Despite his solid contributions under manager Julien Stéphan, and being back in the Wales international squad, recent developments could scupper any hopes he may have had of a permanent switch.

Adding to this, though, it's worth noting that there wasn't any form of buy-clause in Norrington-Davies' original loan agreement with QPR.

Sheffield United cash windfall involving Queens Park Rangers may slip away

According to a report from Dutch outlet Voetbal International, QPR have "already spoken" with NAC Breda captain Boy Kemper's entourage about a possible transfer.

Kemper, a product of Ajax's youth system, is a 26-year-old left-back available on a free transfer this summer, and has been back playing in his country's top-flight for the last two years.

With this in mind, QPR's interest in making Norrington-Davies’ move permanent appears to have cooled.

Norrington-Davies remains under contract at Bramall Lane until the summer of 2027, following a three-year extension signed in August 2024, leaving the Blades with a decision on his future.

Via Capology, the former Luton Town and Stoke City loanee has been earning an estimated weekly salary of £25k over the past two years. This places him as the R's second-highest earner behind Steve Cook.

So, it's perhaps not a surprise to learn that QPR have been looking at what would undoubtedly be a more cost-effective option in Kemper, but that won't be pleasing for Blades... as their aforementioned summer 2025 spending spree has failed spectacularly, with the 24/25 playoff finalists now languishing in 17th.

Wilder will know he needs to be clever in the upcoming transfer market, which would mean prioritising sales of those not in his plans, and Norrington-Davies is likely to be one of them.

It remains unclear what valuation the Blades would place on the Welsh international if they were to sell, but QPR's interest in Kemper shows the harsh realities of Championship recruitment now. Everyone's trying to find a bargain.
