The latest transfer news surrounding Sheffield United

The January transfer window is in full swing, and as we hit the halfway point of the month, sides in the Championship are starting to complete more and more deals.

From Sheffield United's perspective, it's been one in, one contract extended, and four out thus far in the winter window.

Ki-Jana Hoever arrived on loan from Wolves, just days before Patrick Bamford extended his initial short-term deal for another 18 months until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.

The writing was already on the wall for Louie Barry and Ben Godfrey's loan deals at Bramall Lane, as they were sent back to Aston Villa and Atalanta, respectively, and since then, Sam Curtis and Louie Marsh have been sent on loan to Chesterfield and Falkirk, respectively.

But it wouldn't be a January transfer window if every deal got made within the first couple of weeks, and you get the idea that Sheffield United will be rather busy in the coming fortnight.

Here's the latest regarding transfers at Bramall Lane.

FA Cup weekend concluding means transfers will "accelerate" according to Chris Wilder

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder is convinced that there'll be more player movement at Bramall Lane this week, ahead of the Blades' visit to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

This is per a report from the Sheffield Star, who name at least five more players who should be set to follow Curtis and Marsh out of the door on loan until the end of the season.

Ryan One, who the Star states has been linked with a move to League One side and South Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United, could be the next to leave Bramall Lane.

But summer signing Alex Matos and three of Sheffield United's AI-identified arrivals over the past year, Mihail Polendakov, Christian Nwachukwu and Ehije Ukaki, could also make way in the coming weeks, as neither has been given much of a chance in the side since Chris Wilder returned for his third stint as manager.

Now that the schedule has calmed down a little after a hectic Christmas and New Year period, and the FA Cup third round has passed, a game in which fringe players often get a run out to allow regular starters a rest, Wilder believes that sides will be more open to letting players go.

"They need to," the Blades boss said when asked whether players would come and go at Bramall Lane over the next week.

"I do think it will accelerate. I've said before that I did think teams would play some players who maybe don't get games usually, and that might free them up. And I'm sure that will happen."

Sheffield United lead the race for Joe Rothwell

One potential incoming at Bramall Lane this month could be a former Southampton and Leeds United promotion-winner in Joe Rothwell, who looks poised to depart Rangers just six months after arriving there from Bournemouth in the summer.

Pete O'Rourke from Football Insider has reported that Sheffield United lead the race for the recently turned 31-year-old, who would add some extra composure in a midfield that looked lost at sea at times towards the start of the campaign.

Now, with Ollie Arblaster starting to work his way back into the fold, with Sydie Peck still present alongside Djibril Soumare and the experienced Jairo Riedewald, it's less of a crisis area at Bramall Lane, but the Blades are still looking to add there, regardless.

Rothwell was brought in on loan at Leeds last season to play a similar supporting role as he did at Southampton the year prior, but injuries elsewhere meant he actually ended up making 24 starts en route to the Championship title.

Since then, his time at Rangers has hit a brick wall following the arrival of former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, and Rothwell hasn't seen the pitch since early November, meaning that a return to the Championship looks almost certain.

Chris Wilder reacts to Harrison Burrows' interest

Chris Wilder seems keen on bringing Rothwell to Bramall Lane, and he's stressed the importance of allowing some of his fringe players to go out on loan this month.

One player he doesn't want to see leave the club, however, is Harrison Burrows, who has been more of a squad player this season, given the rise to prominence of Sam McCallum, who backed up the 24-year-old last year.

Burrows has been the subject of a £3.5 million bid from Turkish side Trabzonspor, which the Blades knocked back. Although reports do say that they're readying a second bid to the tune of £5 million.

Sheffield United will not be in receipt of parachute payments next season, so a failure to get promoted this year could be detrimental to their financial situation and force them to sell some assets.

Burrows is still young and has a large attacking upside, but given his lesser role this season, he could be expendable. Nevertheless, Chris Wilder doesn't want to see him depart anytime soon and hopes that he'll be part of the decision if another deal comes in.

"I don't want to lose any players [...] I'm trying to build, and Harrison has been a part of that," Wilder told the Sheffield Star.

"At the moment, he's having a battle with Sammy, and he's got a fight on his hands to push and get into the team, but he's still a young player, and still somebody we want around the place.

"If the time comes when the owners and chief exec say: 'We really have to consider this,' then I'd like to think that I'd be part of that discussion."
