Sheffield United will have more of an incentive to beat Leicester City next season should Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl take the Foxes hotseat.
The hunt for Leicester City’s new manager continues as the Foxes parted company with Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The East Midlands outfit will be preparing to mount an instant promotion push back to the Premier League, but it will be increasingly challenging given the club’s financial situation.
Leicester are expected to face a hefty points deduction heading into the 2025-26 campaign, with the club likely to eye a play-off place at most come the end of the season.
Stability is what is needed at the moment so Leicester can look forward to the future, and hiring a new manager will be the first thing on the agenda.
The Foxes have been heavily linked with a move for current Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, while the German has reportedly told the Owls senior squad that he will leave Hillsborough.
If Leicester end up agreeing a compensation package to appoint Rohl, then Sheffield United fans could form a new rivalry with Leicester, as the duo are both set to compete towards the upper ends of the table.
Given his connections to Sheffield Wednesday, Danny Rohl will be a hated man to those connected with red and white in the steel city, with many Blades supporters praying for his downfall should he move to a Championship rival.
A ferocious war could be sparked between Sheffield United and Leicester City, given Blades fans know that Rohl will be competing against them for a spot back in the top-flight. Sheffield United will be hopeful of spoiling their hopes all season, but when the two teams clash in the Championship at Bramall Lane, the atmosphere could be raucous.
With the Championship fixtures already announced, Sheffield United face off against Leicester at Bramall Lane on New Year’s Day to welcome in 2026.
Sheffield United supporters will relish the occasion to sink Rohl and his potentially future Leicester side, and it is certain to be on the players’ minds when the build-up to each game begins and the surrounding talk surfaces.
As the 2025-26 campaign progresses, there will be hope that both Leicester City and Sheffield United can hurl themselves into promotion contention to generate the best atmosphere, although the duo have big hurdles to overcome.
Leicester, of course, will have to battle back from quite a punishing points deduction, while Sheffield United are unsure how they will fare under Ruben Selles, with the Spaniard taking the biggest job of his career so far and expectations high after their play-off final heartache.
If the duo can both be in the race for promotion come their meetings, then the environment is bound to be electric anyway, but if Danny Rohl is in the Leicester dugout, then that will spice it up to a toxic and hostile environment for the Foxes players to contend with.
Leicester’s appointment of Rohl has the potential to form a special rivalry, and it could prove to be the standout fixture pick to be enjoyed either watching inside the stadium or at home on TV.
