Sheffield Wednesday's summer of despair doesn't seem to be getting any better. Wednesday have already lost some of their best players and their head coach, while financial issues have been pushing the club close to breaking point, with wages having been paid late for the last three consecutive months, millions owed in transfer fees to other clubs, and a run of player sales.

With news that the North Stand at Hillsborough had not been given a safety certificate and subsequently closed, whether they would even be able to start the season has been called into question. In terms of numbers, they're already down to bare bones; they currently have just 16 registered senior players and one of those has given in his notice.

EFL issue statement confirming extension to Wednesday transfer embargo

The EFL have on Wednesday issued a statement in which they discuss all matters relating to the current condition of Sheffield Wednesday. Most notably, they confirm that Wednesday's transfer embargo has now been extended to the end of the winter 2027 window, a two-window - or one-year - extension on the current embargo.

Elsewhere, they confirm that matches are okay to go ahead at Hillsborough with the North Stand closed and are working with the club on where to put season ticket holders from that stand, and that there are no impediments to them starting their Championship season from their end, at Leicester City on the 10th August.

Best that can be said for EFL statement is that it could have been worse

None of this, of course, means that Sheffield Wednesday are out of the woods. If anything, the EFL's statement was about as good as the club could have hoped for, considering their current condition. But there are still existential issues that the club needs to address, most importantly a takeover in the near future, and an injection of money to get them back onto an even keel.

There remains a risk that further players could depart. FIFA rules allow them to, and they've already lost two - Josh WIndass and Michael Smith - while a third - Max Lowe - seems set to join them. Whether Wednesday can get a team out to play isn't just a matter of the EFL's rules. That's also in the hands of the players.
